About the Activity

This Web activity is based on content presented at a satellite symposium held September 8, 2007, during the annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management. To remain consistent with the location and atmosphere of the meeting—Hollywood, California—we designed the activity title and graphics around some of Hollywood’s classic films. This Web activity, featuring experts in the field of blood management, provides a data-driven approach to the preoperative management of anemia in patients undergoing elective surgery. This activity will provide ample evidence to support the development of a collaborative preoperative anemia management program in your surgical facility.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to

  • develop a protocol for routine screening for and differential diagnosis of anemia four weeks before the scheduled date of elective surgery;

  • identify patients for whom erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) may be indicated;

  • safely decrease the rate of administering allogeneic transfusions to surgical patients;

  • analyze the cost/benefit ratio for treating anemia preoperatively with ESAs vs perioperatively with allogeneic transfusion.
