About the Activity

The challenges associated with the management of HBV infection were addressed by a satellite symposium held during the 57th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in Boston, Massachusetts, and are reiterated in this series of three articles. The articles in this CME supplement are case-based and provide practical approaches to halting the natural history of HBV infection, to tailoring HBV therapy, and to treating pregnant or immunosuppressed patients infected with HBV.

Learning Objectives

After completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to

  • project the natural history of liver disease according to serum HBV DNA viral load;

  • analyze the effect of swift, robust, and sustained suppression of HBV DNA concentration on treatment efficacy and disease progression;

  • customize the timing of treatment, the selection of agent(s), and the alteration of regimens for the management of HBV infection;

  • decrease the risk of drug resistance through the careful selection of anti-HBV therapeutic regimens;

  • expose the limitations of the current HBV treatment guidelines;

  • individualize the management of HBV infection in challenging patient populations according to the benefit-to-risk ratio.
